The sun, moon and stars hold great religious and spiritual significance and frequently appear in Native American folk art and in religious ceremonies. The Sun, giver of life, warmth, growth, all that is good with the universe. The Spiral Symbol is a common symbol for many tribes, signifying the enhanced conscious that can occur duting a long journey. The sun is earth's source of light and warmth and many cultures considered the sun as a god or deity and a symbol of power.
Sun and solar symbols represent creative and natural energy include variations of the circle. Circles represent continuity and the changes in nature such as the four seasons; winter, spring, summer and fall, day and night, life and death. Spiritual attributes of the sun include the symbol of life, good fortune, personal growth. Star attributes include new birth, happiness, prosperity and good fortune.
The Morning Star, brightest star on the horizon at dawn, is considered an important spirit and is honored as a kachina among most Pueblos. The Plains and Great Basin people honor it as a sign of courage and purity of spirit. The Ghost Dance Religion used it as a symbol of the coming renewal of tradition and resurrection of the heroes of the past. Most other spirits are represented as stars under some circumstances.
Decorated kachina masks will make great wall hanging decorations for both children and grown-up parties with thematic events.
Print and trace the designs onto multi-color fun craft foam sheets to create pliable and colorful soft face masks. Use left over trimmings of foam pieces to cut and paste intricate designs and shapes onto the mask.
For best results print on heavy duty vellum paper or card stock. All paper mask designs are printable on regular or heavy duty 8 1/2" x 11" paper. Print landscape mode for larger masks, portrait setting for smaller masks.
